What Is a Swamp Cooler?

Swamp coolers also known as Evaporative Coolers  are a type of cooling device used in warehouses, factories, and other places to reduce high heat temperatures. Generally, swamp coolers have also been known to be called desert coolers or wet-air coolers. They work by sweeping hot circulating air through a wet media pad and converting it into cool air being pushed into the facility in a circulating function.   

Evolution of Evaporative Coolers

Evaporative coolers use the same science as sweating for most terrestrial beings and plants. The mechanism is simple, but we all do it differently. Going back as far as 6,000 years.


Plants employ a form of evaporative cooling known as transpiration. On the leaves of plants, tiny pores allow water to be drawn from the soil to the leaf's surface. This water evaporates and cools the plant. Plants have mechanisms to increase the likelihood of this phenomenon, including increasing their leaves and increasing themselves higher from the ground until they suffer too much evaporation and wilt (dry up).


Dogs' panting helps the blood to circulate from their nose, throat, and lungs to the lining of their brains, allowing them to cool down. Their unique blood vessels act as heat exchangers between the inside of their noses and brains, allowing the latter to be cooler than the rest of the body.


Cats also use a physical mechanism to regulate their temperature. While the primary reason for licking their fur is for cleansing, the moisture on a cat's fur as it grooms itself evaporates, anchoring its temperature. 


Other animals, like pigs, often wallow or roll to coat themselves in mud, then let the water from the mud evaporate, cooling themselves.
